He said there is no need to panic response to the fall of the rupee, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Friday, one day after the Indian unit to hit its lowest level against the dollar - NEW DELHI (Reuters).
The rupee fell to a record low level of 59.9850 against the dollar on Thursday, after the statement of the U.S. Federal Reserve on its plan to reduce monetary stimulus.
"We are not isolated from what is happening in the rest of the world," Chidambaram said at a news conference. "My order is that we should not react and panic. Which is what happens all over the world."
Chidambaram said policy makers and monitoring and the rupee and the Reserve Bank of India to do whatever was necessary to stop the fall.
The rupee was one of the worst performing currency in Asia after World sales caused by fears that the Fed may begin tapering American support for the economy. (Reporting by Rajesh Kumar Singh and editing by Anupama Dwivedi)
